Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned his people to prepare for a possible Russian nuclear attack and called for a stockpile of anti-radiation pills. He said they must prepare for the bleak scenario and get hold of the medicine, which could help curb radiation sickness.
Zelensky made the warning in an interview before sharing the clip on his Telegram channel on April 16. He also made a similar announcement the day prior, saying nuclear weapons could not be ruled out, with Russian President Vladimir Putin considering the move while the war with Ukraine stalls.
Putin has already ramped up his offensive after the Moskva battleship sank on April 14, attacking eight towns in Ukraine, including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv, The flagship in the Black Sea was said to have been severely damaged after it was hit by missiles. Unconfirmed reports also said up to 500 Russian sailors aboard may have died.
Meanwhile, a British fighter captured by Russian forces in Mariupol was paraded on television. The man, Shaun Pinner, was known to be a contract soldier fighting off the Russian invasion. Pinner was said to be the second Englishman caught in Mariupol.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow would use a nuclear deterrent on Ukraine in the event of an existential threat: Russia’s policy seems to be “escalate to de-escalate,” which could include launching a small nuclear weapon to gain an upper hand in the war.
Zelensky also expressed concerns that Putin may use chemical weapons against Ukraine. He also said more air raid shelters and anti-radiation medicines would be needed, as the Russians can use any weapon during the war.
When asked about the prospect of a nuclear attack, Zelensky said all countries have to be worried. “Chemical weapons. They could do it, for them the life of the people [is] nothing. That’s why. We should think not to be afraid, not be afraid, but be ready.”
He also said around 2,500 to 3,000 Ukrainian troops have died so far, while another 10,000 have been injured during the conflict. There have been reports from the United Nations that at least 1,982 Ukrainian civilians have been killed in the war.
“It is very difficult to talk about civilians since south of our country, where the towns and cities are blocked – Kherson, Berdyansk, Mariupol further east, and the area to the east where Volnovakha is – we just don’t know how many people have died in that area that is blocked,” he said.
Zelensky said the sinking of the Moskva warship was a plus factor, noting that the fewer weapons the Russian Federation has, the better it is for them. (Related: Survey finds that more than one-third of Americans are willing to risk nuclear war with Russia over Ukraine.)
Ukraine’s Odesa Region Governor Maksym Marchenko said Ukrainian forces struck the ship with two Neptune anti-ship missiles. However, the Russians said their warship sunk after an ammunition explosion.
Russia claimed that all 500 crew members were rescued, but Ukrainian officials said some of those on board died, including the captain.
The Russian Federation has suffered damages in two of its key naval assets since invading Ukraine. British defense chiefs said Russia will likely review its maritime posture in the Black Sea in the wake of the incident.
Ukrainian soldiers also appeared to defy a Russian ultimatum to lay down their arms in the port of Mariupol, which Moscow said its forces had almost completely seized. The Ukrainian fighters showed no signs of surrender, and the Russian military has refocused on its ground offensive on the eastern Donbas region.
